Jeff, This is a GREAT article. If I didn't know better I'd think you had been meditating on this topic. I shall give your tips a go.

Hey, I recently added a news widget from www.widgetmate.com to my blog. It shows the latest news, and just took a copy and paste to implement. Might interest you too.

Hello, I've read your "grading your guitar skill" article and thought you might be interested in my 2 cents about it here : http://thebestguitarsiteintheworld.blogspot.com

Thanks for taking the time to write this interesting and thought provoking article.

I would however go a step further. The issues your raise still seem to deal with outward perceptions and what might be thought of you and your practice efforts. In my opinion the only person that matters is yourself.

If at any single moment during practice you can identifty the section of music you are working on, why you're working it and how you're working it then I believe you are most of the way to solving the game of practice.

Thank you so much.
I begun studying music some month ago, choosing a simple instrument - a pennywhistle. I made progress, but not as much as I expected, expecially comparing my results to... the one of others which started around when I did, and posted the results on youtube.

I started to give positive messages to myself ("you are progressing nevertheless", "keep going on and the results will arrive", but also comparative messages like "they are younger", "they are more talented" - something quite positive, quite negative.

I will think over it again.
The very few times I played FREE from any expectations were the best one, both for the emotions I felt and for the technical result itself.

Thanks so much!
